Based on 2009 Data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress:
- Michigan ranks 37th out of 50 states in 8th grade Math Achievement and 33rd in 8th grade Reading Achievement
- Michigan's 8th grade students have the second highest achievement gap between Black and White students, and the 5th highest reading achievement gap, in the nation.
- Michigan's Black 8th grade students have the lowest math scores and the second lowest reading scores in the nation.
